Welcome to our blog, ‘Our Two Cents – Seven student’s input of working life.’

This blog aims to:

  • Explain what professionalism is and what it means to us
  • Discuss what it means to be a professional
  • Identify the Graduate Attributes
  • Explore the facets of these attributes, and how they translate into working life.

Though we are all writing from diverse ethnic and academic backgrounds, there are universal characteristics that our degrees share, and essential skills that we as University graduates will take with us into our own careers and lives.

Member’s Introduction:

Azahar

I’m studying BSc in Information Technology majoring in Cyber Forensics, Information Security and Management, and Internetworking and Security. Basically the majors give me a strong understanding of IT Security both theorectically and technically . After being expose in this field, I’m more paranoid. Security is one of those things organisations keep at the back of their mind. To quote my lecturer, “It’s the poor cousin of IT”. It only gets attention when something goes wrong.

As for the blog, in the comming weeks I will be giving “my two cents” on one of the graduate attribute; Social Jusctice. According to Murdoch University, Social Justice is:

An Acknowledgement of and respect for equality of opportunity, individual and civic responsibility, other cultures and times, and an appreciation of cultural diversity. [link]

I will bring into the discussion my university, working and life experiences. What social justice means to me and what I’ve experienced personally.

I am studying a Bachelor of English and Creative Arts, majoring in creative writing. My major has given me an excellent understanding of english, textual analysis for fiction and non fiction texts, strong writing skills and the ability to think creatively and write expressively.

As well as expressing my own opinions about professionalism, I will be discussing the Graduate Attribute Critical and Creative thinking, defined on the Teaching and Learning website as the ability:

… to collect, analyse and evaluate information and ideas and solve problems by thinking clearly, critically and creatively.

Like all of the graduate attributes, critical and creative thinking is a valuable skill in both the work place and in every day life, and I will be focusing on the benefits, techniques and applications of such ways of thinking.

Carvin

I am pursuing my Degree in Cyber Forensics, Information Security and Management double majoring with Business Information Systems. Studying in this course has opened my eyes to the many dangers and vulnerbilities of Information Technology that many businesses and industries heavily rely on. I have become more aware of the ignorant culture many people have about cyber security and failing to protect themselves from the “spider WEB”.

As a fresh Grad launching into the working world, I will use this blog to potray my feelings and thoughts about being a professional. I will also be discussing about the ethical aspect of the Graduate Attribute. Me, together with my team mate hope to infuse our diverse ideas into this blog and share it with the world. So CHEERS! and lookout for our weekly updates.

I am an aspiring games maker majoring in a Bachelor of Multimedia in Interactive Digital Design and minoring in Games Technology. The exposure from a rigid educational schooling system to a radical and new field of study such as games has dramatically affected my views of self, study and career. Being more acutely aware of how our modern culture embraces the age of technology and lifestyle, I will add my little alternative side of opinions into the forthcoming discussions of professionalism and what it means to us. I will also write about the graduate attribute of interdisciplinarity, explaining what it is and how it is relevant to a graduating student.

I am pursing a BA degree with a double major in Politics, International studies and Security Counter Terrorism studies accompanied by minors in Social and Health Psychology. My majors have developed my critical and analytical skills. In research, i have learned to explore and assess every possible aspect to a situation before rendering my analysis. While my psychology minors contribute a more humanistic perspective to my views.
i shall discuss professionalism and the graduate attribute of independent and lifelong learning. This graduate attribute is relevant for graduates because learning doesn’t just end at university, its a life long process.

I am currently enrolled in a Bachelor in Commerce, completing double major in Management and Human Resource Management, with a minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. I am completing this studies in an attempt to become a Human Resource Manager, as I can depict the value of employees and the benefits for firms be acknowledging employees as people as well as a means of production. However, as the importance of this field is still emerging I have enrolled in Management and Entrepreneurship & Innovation as a back-up.

In this blog, I will be discussing professionalism and the graduate attribute communication. Methods of communication include speech, reading, writing, listening and the ability to communication via technology. The development of student’s communication skills is vital, for every field of study.

Olecia

I am from a science background studying Bachelor Degree in Environmental Science. Environmental Science is a very broad degree that teaches interconnections between physical, chemical and biological components of the environment. This degree gives me insight into how our everyday activities impact on the environment. I hope with the knowledge and skills gained during my studies at university I will be able to remediate some of the environmental issues that we are dealing with today.

In my posts I will be discussing what professionalism means to me and how it fits into my area of study. I will also take a close look at graduate attributes that all of us as students obtain during our studies at university.

    Hi to ‘Our Two cents’
I am wondering if your name is a play on sense
as in making sense and cents as in money?
and if to make 2 senses is to always see two sides of every point: as critically thinking professional may tend to do!

    Hi Julia,

The title? Sure why not. It was one of 3 titles proposed, however we like this one the most. Quoting a group member, “it encompasses exactly what we are talking about”. So we went with it.

    Cheers

    Hi,

I’m a student from SMa School Of Management in Singapore, under going a double major course in Mass Communications, Majoring in Public Relations and Communication, Technology and Policy.

The display of blog articles posted here has given me a better view of different people’s perception about their majors.

I would like to agree with Carvin’s, or Maria Robinson’s, blog post on the subject of Information Technology; Murdoch has indeed helped us understand the opportunities we have to communicate and work with the World Wide Web.

I would anticipate information about the difficulties your team mate and you have gone through during modules which have make the most of the World Wide Web. As well as the strategies and methods you used to overcome these problems.

As you mentioned “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending”. I am excited to get some advice from your team and implement the strategies which you will be providing in my studies.

    Thank you.

    Regards,
    Goh Yu Wei, Christopher

    Hey Christopher,

One of question asked how we deal the difficulties dealing with the World Wide Web (WWW), different people have different approach to it as do the problems they face. My particular problem was and still is finding credible information on the web for research on assignments. As you know anyone can post anything in the internet and make it look credible, just like Wikipedia. What I did was to 1st look up Wiki and other site like it and then see if the underlying theme of the information is the same. If it is then could be considered credible, though citing Wiki is not allowed. It’s also advising to see if the writer of the article can be traced and to see if he/she has written other articles.

That’s general the difficulty I’ve experience and approach to tackle it. That and couple with the numerous scripts running the background of website that automatically download malicious code to your computer, is also a hassle. But by running Linux shouldn’t be a problem.

    Hope this help.

    Cheers
    Azahar

    Hi Azahar,

Thank you for your reply and directions.

I agree that it is very hard to actually obtain credible information on the World Wide Web (WWW). I do face the same problem as the internet is an open two way communication, everyone and anyone is entitled to post their thoughts and opinions(some even posts useless information).

As David Shenk mentioned in his book, the idea of how the information technology revolution would shape the world at large and how the incredible amount of data available on the Internet would make it more difficult for the average individual to shift through and separate fact from fiction.

According to “Data Smog,” with the advance of technology, we have been able to progress in terms of society, economy, and even health. Communication is instantaneous, knowledge is abundant, and as humans we try to keep up with this expansion of data that continues to accumulate from around the world. It is exactly what is happening to the internet at this current state.

It is incredible if we look at it in a way that how people can foretell the future 10 years ago.

In conclusion, I feel that it is basically impossible to control this medium anymore, as it was let loose when it first started. We can only hope for a new medium of data collection/ archive break through to be introduce. So we’ll just have to bare with it until that new invention introduces.

    Regards,
    Chris
