The stairs took us to the depths of the library. As we passed a picture of Walter Murdoch a light flashed. It could have been that faulty fluorescent tube or - a high speed retinal scan. We approached the designated room as a student librarian watched casually from the stacks. As we entered the room we were hit by a cacophony of noise and lights and smells. We found our individual workplaces. Then, a hush descended on the room. There they stood - the six Amigos. “Welcome to Cooking 101- we will be your guides through the labyrinthine secrets of exotic cooking. Today’s session is on Italian Cooking. You will learn things so secret that they have no names.”
For the next four hours we watched and noted, then cooked and tasted. Spaghetti trailed from one workplace to the next. Although only morning tea, the Amigos popped bottles of sparkling Libx and poured generous goblets for all. Snacks for morning tea consisted of wood fire-foxed pizza or was it fox-fired – with a deep mozzarella flavour enriched with copious amounts of open-accessed basil. As the training session progressed the room took on a golden glow- with steaming pots and billowing aromas. Trainers and trainees alike struggled to keep clear heads- blogging in old growth forests. At close we lurched off to our destinations. Maybe our cooking skills were not easier and faster but participants definitely felt friendlier and sparklier. Who knows what adventures face us in the second session.
