Multi-purpose New Media = Media Convergence

November 3rd, 2009

The video above by Jeff Greenfield has gave his introduction to what is Media Convergence. My post this time will talk on how it will affect our life when transition takes over from old media to the new converged media. Well firstly this media convergence technological trend as i observe will only be available to those that could afford the media. Secondly, it affects the most on the dot.com generation or generation Y as these generation are born at the same existence converge media are being given birth, this generation will never read newspapers nor buy disc to purchase songs anymore in the future. They will also not going to get to live with the world that we are living in right now. Economically, media conglomerates may even one day giving free converged media in the future to everyone so that the users can access and purchase various things using it (e.g. musics, ordering fast food, etc) till turning it into the only tool that they need in their life. Why would i say that media conglomerates would do so? Well its cheaper to give the users a tool that will let them purchase items and profit the organizations in long term rather than let them purchase the tool to enable them to purchase using the tool. Addition to that, it will encouraged them to use it like a part of their limb. What do you think the future holds for media convergence?

Internet and New Media Languages

November 2nd, 2009

I’m sure that users worldwide especially forumers e.g invisionfree.com and bloggers came over words that are short form internet realm words.

E.G. LOL, ROFLMAO, OMGWTFBBQ and so forth, this was mentioned in Chee Fong’s Internet Urban Languages

Since he already covered on the topic, my post will cover more upon the religion/race of the language where it is used. Why i mentioned its a religion/race, it’s due to the matter that i found out that even internet language cannot universally be used in the internet world. For instance, Blizzard Entertertainment’s World of Warcraft created internet language like OOM an abreviation for ‘Out of Mana’ displayed that internet language can be exclusive to certain situation in the internet world as for this only for that MMORPG game. Where else, certain internet language such as ‘OOT’(out of topic) or ‘flaming’ or ‘troll’ exist more to text posting internet arena that involves blogging and forum post just like blogging and forum posting is a type of race where the language stays exclusive for that while other races (e.g games, instant messenger chat programs) has their own exclusive language.

With all this internet made languages, have you ever thought of their origins? the history of these languages? Did you notice that it even has affect you on your own real life language such as using ‘LOL’ even in real life conversation?

I can conclude that even internet creates languages for daily use in real life when internet users subconsciously use it as a daily basis. Further more, languages does not only count as textual but emoticons as well, semiotics of image to display a language. :D <- I’m happy

We are Web 3.0

November 2nd, 2009

After watching the video above, it sort of gave me shivers to my spine as to recall back on the previous post. From web 1.0, it is mostly dry information which is a one way information to its audience then evolving to web 2.0 and the users start to get to interact with the information then in Web 3.0 from the video above, it seems as if the informations has an Artificial Intelligence now that can even control the users. Are we really wanting this sort of future?

So let’s see on how we ourselves the users use the internet information and if possible prevent such outcome. Firstly we know that as Kai-Ti mentioned, information is the only currency that is transactional in the internet world so how do we control trading and banking of this currency using the internet?

One of them is through RSS feeds which is like sort of a subscription or an atm machine to information which works as a an info provider by your preference. Secondly, tagging works like a money changer outlet, it gets you the information that you want while listing other possible options that is related to what you wanted to search for. Finally filtering is sort of a way to hold back from getting information overload while providing you a listing that is only what you wanted in detail this could be compared to the banking assist personnel which helps the clients on registering their preferred account and when agreed upon will only give benefits as per wanted by their clients.

With three of this in use, Web 3.0 is possible to be controlled by the user but though it is the best solution for now, it can still be flawed in a way that information that is put on the 3 areas to control the information you wanted can be used by a third party to invade those currency that is private to you or even use against you. So my question here is that, is there an ultimate solution over this issue to control Web 3.0? Can internet information be a total private information for the user if you happened to pattern it for yourself?

User-generated contents… who owns it?

November 2nd, 2009

Following up from my previous post on user-generated content, I’ve noticed that the ownership of user-generated content is vaguely shown in the internet world. This is especially best portrayed in the realm of Youtube as the videos are by users (who are in this case as producers) What’s gray between the line in the sense of ownership in youtube is that the video itself seems like it is owned by everyone and anyone that access that page. Why do i say this:

The producer:
He is the person who create the original item. He has the ability to edit the video, the power to limit the other users to embed or post on the video.

The other users who watch the video:
These people has the power to flag the video hence the power to control distribution. Post comment and even embed without giving notice to the producer of the video. Do they own it too?

The owner of the web utility site, e.g. Youtube:
The company that owns youtube has the power to delete the user’s video if they ‘feel’ inappropriate for their site or when other users flagged them. They even have the overall power to promote the video or use it to promote their website! So do they own it as well?

So at the end.. Who owns user-generated contents or is it that as soon as the user-generated content were given birth, it is already a rightfully public item?

Media conglomerates on the power of user-generated contents and how they put importance and rivalry with others for the sake of user-generated contents:

well in a way, user generated contents are much or less associated to a bowl of rice to the people just that this is through the internet~

Exploited! The Web 2.0 and U

November 2nd, 2009

OMG I Lurrrveeee Dramatic Chipmunk~!

As the emergence of Web 2.0, users have been given utilities online such as this:- blogging to create their own ‘user-generated’ content, may it be text or moving images and so forth. The thing is that users finds this as an achievement to feel known/popular worldwide being an ‘eternal’ celeb on the web but what they don’t realize is that the fact they are a bunch of free long term advertisement for the utility that they use! See Youtube for instance, Chris Crocker - Leave Britney alone, Tron Guy, Dramatic Chipmunk, Afro Ninja, Numa Numa Guy, Tay Zonday - Chocolate Rain, The Sneezing Panda, the duo for Asian Backstreet Boys and the Laughing Baby video. People enjoy this videos so much that it has the most hits on Youtube and this ‘hits’ proves as markers for Youtube’s success that itself as capitalizing on user’s generated content hence Youtube is getting free advertising and businesses are form for the profit of Youtube.

Tron Guy talks on how he will be eternalized on the internet:

Expenses i paid with time on New Medias

November 2nd, 2009

Follow up to my previous post, i did say that people nowadays, well mostly the urbanites like me are spending more and more time on the new media more like a marijuana an addiction. My evaluation on myself sort of showed prove that it is a sort of more like a habit. I notice myself that each and every morning i woke up, i don’t go straight to the loo instead my right hand will have to rest on the mouse and then both on keyboard just to look and hook up into facebook to devour information about the happenings just as compared to olden times when people just got up to get print publications (newspaper) to get in touch with the world. I guess this is how medias has evolve with time taking over the jobs of the ancient medias while making it or create a new culture for humanoids. This post makes it seem like instead of the human beings are not in controlled, it illustrate that we are just like worker bees for a bee hive in this sense making it habitual for us to collect honeys for the hive hence new media technologies has the power to create new culture. OMG I’m being controlled subconsciously… Ooops didn’t i already realized that. LOL.

A piece of video which will show you how media shapes our brain while it evolves from time to time:

Can you live without it?

September 8th, 2009

So prior to Shane’s video discussing bout what technology i can’t live without, i was wondering myself actually.. for the first time that i’ve never actually wondered before like: Can i live without my ps3? my internet line/my computer? Will it kill me for not having them?

Maybe it won’t kill me but i would definitely be like a marijuana addict craving for more of those weeds. Urm, i think thats over exaggerated. Rephrasing - more like i would act differently or maybe it would shape me into another different person that i would not possibly be. Just like Albert Bandura’s Bobo dolls test on violence behaviour, i would think that it would change my behavioral aspects of myself after long being dependent on this new media equipments.

Why is it so? Take internet or handphones for instance, it gets me socialized with people in the most Fastest, Cheapest and Efficient way whilst in different form of messages nowadays;SMS , MMS, Voice MSG, EMAIL, Blogs *like this 1 here*.. list goes on as technology advances.. who knows maybe we could do hologram messages one day, which might take the sort of singing telegram style service to a new level and oh yea~ Vlogs which im plannning to do in awhile for my future postings.

Imagine with all this services available and you being lacking behind or without them, don’t you think as a new media user in this current age, you will feel like you’ve been deprived off from water or food? I know i will cause to me, new media is about making my life easier and easier to organize. Well i’ll be the organizer but well new media is the platform. So why push it away?

Hence, due to the fast pace of technology evolution era in the current timeline, we as the human users to the technology have to keep in track to parallel with the changes or more like forced to do it or else others will and being left behind could probably means you will be less advance than others. Some people wouldn’t care but i do. Even parents and the governments of this time of age knows the absolute power that new media holds. Take an example, in Malaysia itself, why would even Mahathir bothers to push for the Multimedia Super Corridor(MSC) to make the country more literate in the use of computers?

E-Gaming? Bad/Good? Which Character do you play?

September 8th, 2009

One of the things mentioned in Mr.B’s blog caught my attention wholly (referring to the title).. Well I’m a gamer, why am i not attracted to that issue?! Personally I would say I sort of had lived through those stereotyping done by more ‘mature’ thinking people in demonizing electronic games being the catalyst of poor upbringing and causing harm to the mental/physical life of a child ever since 1991. That was when i was 6, my granny bought me a SEGA genesis and i would say having a console gaming device that time was similar to have found a South African Jewel. Agreeing to Mr.B, i was at that age naive and just fell full controlled by the device itself (sort of like playing games will be put under the Maslow’s Hierarchyof Needs) ; sad to say the remnants of its effects still lives on up till now but at least, time and mentality changes, plus age makes a factor to define who is the master and the slave now.

Jumping to current views on gaming depictions, as ‘Gaming = Brought Negative Effects’ notion is just a play of the older generations dogmatic thoughts just as how the politicians/government in Malaysia are trying to impose a monarchy control over its citizens; Gaming has now been given more views on in positive sides and not to mention its purpose in saving lives! Yep, playing Games saves lives too.

Follow the link to see how it works MSNBC: PLAYING MAKES LESSER MISTAKES

Asides that, playing games can get you some moolah and a job in your own cosy room. Just see how the China MMORPG players are harvesting real cash by selling intangible items using online games throughout the world. Isn’t it doing more good than bad now?

A pasta for the post:

Of course there will still be conservative people of the old era who still wants their old world not to be poluted by this but the fact is they are just jealous of people of the new era getting a better life ahead of them using non conform ways than theirs. So i would say the problem lies within the mentality of different generations? Does it makes me lesser of an unethical person to stay alive in this dog eats dog world using gaming as a medium of trading shop?

And lastly, before i forgot to put this down; PS3 console online/PSN HOME are now becoming a device for games cum online shop cum internet browser. See how it has evolved! (Pictures will be posted up soon)

Hello world!

August 13th, 2009

Woah! I’m blogging that’s so not me (i’m supposed to be vlogging) but im shackled in the world of MCC315 for now, soooo well… im obligated to do so. Ahh where’s my manners, Samuel Lee here making a grand entrance to this arena of forced & controlled blogging.

One thing for sure, setting up a flashy blog is no easy task.. CSS, scripts, jibberish hieroglyphs internet language and the list goes on but no fear, the great Sam shall digest it all in a single day. Well, maybe not but one of the days when he feels his blog is all not that peacock beauty colored as the others around.

I’m not complaining about the blogging part seriously! To me it’s all similar to engaging in a quest learning and completing new skills which can later on be use for other tasks just like playing World of Warcraft. Mehhh… I miss my tauren shaman in there (chain lightning, earth shock, war stomp…). Ooops, got carried away.

Anyway back to New Media Tech; since i’m talking bout wanted to do vlogging, why don’t we compare it to the old media. CD’s, DVD’s, VHS … etc are much of a hassle compare to nowadays. Recording and distributing to large masses are made cheaper (yes you heard me! because you need not pay another extra moolah to get a video of you recorded with tangible medium for distributions) and efficient by a click on the record tab for the webcam and the next thing you know, you have already became the next top celebrity world wide through internet. What i’m talking about? New Media has enabled users worldwide cheaper and much much easier way to reach masses plus it’s hassle free (imagine going all the trouble putting a blank tape/disc on a video recorder then continuing with burning it and you might still get error on the disc and in regards to distributing, mailing?)

Well i’m going to go back learning a thing or two from my roommate for now since he is much more of a veteran blogger than me. Look forward for my video blog - vlog links here in the future :)
