2. What is LibX?
LibX is a great way to get to what is in our library without being on any of the library’s websites. Here are a few of the things it can do.
- If you are browsing a website such as Amazon.com and see a book you like, LibX inserts an icon or embedded cue that you can click on and see whether that book is in our library.
- If you are off campus and find a site where you need to put in your Murdoch password for access, then you can right-click and LibX can take you straight to the login screen.
- It adds a search box to your browser so you can do a library search without needing to be on the library site. We have set up searches for a range of things such as the Library Catalogue, Library Portal, e-books, theses and movies.
- You can access full text journal articles that the library has whenever it finds them mentioned in a web page.
How do I get LibX do this?
LibX is an addon for the web browser. You download it from the My Library Tools page and add it to your web browser. It works best with Firefox, but you can add it to IE too.
3. Why are we learning about LibX?
LibX makes it easy to get to what we have in the Library without having to go through the Library’s website. It saves you time when browsing the internet by letting you quickly determine if the library has what you are looking for.
4. What you need to do to complete this Thing
- Download LibX from the My Library Tools page.
- Explore some of the LibX features listed below.
5. How to download and use LibX
- Using Firefox, go to the My Library Tools/ LibX Murdoch page. Click on the
button and follow the instructions to download and install LibX.
- Restart Firefox when instructed.
- Look for the new toolbar bar at the top of your browser.

- LibX adds links to the Library Catalogue from other websites in the form of embedded cues. You may see a double dotted line under numbers (like this
) the Murdoch shield symbol
; or this “Find it” symbol
. Try searching for a book at Amazon.com or Google Books. Look for any of the embedded cues and click on them to see if Murdoch has the book.
- Find the search box in LibX (it is below the box that shows the web address of where you are browsing). Enter a word to find a book in our library catalogue.
- Highlight some text on a webpage, then drag the selected text onto the Scholar button your LibX toolbar to instantly search for that text.
- Highlight some text on a webpage. This time, right click on your selected text and choose “Search Google Scholar for [selected text]“. From your results, look for the “Find it” symbol
or the link Find it@Murdoch. Click to see if your item is available from your library.
- From off campus, LibX gets you straight into websites that the library pays to access, without you going through the library website first. Try going to http://www.sciencedirect.com/ , search for something, and then:
- Right click anywhere on the page
- Select from the menu “Go to [site] via Off Campus Access” (sometimes it will say “reload [site] via Off Campus Access”)
- If you can access it via the library, you will be asked for your Murdoch username and password.
