The habit of thinking (2)

February 18, 2009 · 4 Comments

Building body muscles takes time and effort. I wonder why we tend not to recognise how much time and effort has to go into building our brain’s ability to lift the heavy weight of concepts and ideas at university? Not being a very athletic type myself, I would never expect to be able to swim to Rottnest or ride a bike to Perth, but maybe if I trained every day for a year I might be able to manage the bike ride ( but doubt if I could do the swim!). Yet, students often expect to walk into university and in their first year with little training and immediately begin to make the distance with their critical and analytical thinking.

Slow down, build up those brain “muscles” bit by bit, and don’t worry if you feel confused! That is all part of the training program of being in first year at university.

I wonder if 0ther first years (like me) have been thinking about dropping out rather than dropping into thinking like you’ve written about in your blogs….what a great way of looking at getting brain fit…exercise and time…….ah of course!

Yes, exercise and time.. plus repetition. Yet how do we schedule/organise these fitness extensions (of our mind) in such a way to avoid an associated narrowing of our focus? Will our exercises improve our general fitness, or will it simply focus it for specific patterns, and possibly exclude or diminish broader dimensions?

Athletes, like the Rottnest swimmers, build specific muscle sets. Yet apparently they also experience increased mind oxygenatation, and improved general learning abilities as side effects of their physical exercise. Will specific mind exercises also enable more general abilities?

some great advice for new steps, remember it’s a marathon, not a sprint, pace yourself.

First year students tend to always be over confident of their thinking abilities at first. Coming from Highschool thinking where they are spoon fed facts and figures, to uni style educations that demands creative and ‘thinking outside the box’. They might jump into unprepared, but either way, they are learning something from the experience.
