Thing 10: Create your own wiki using PBwiki

Thing 10: Create your own wiki using PBwiki
Why? Easy to manage website where you can work with others

Your wiki could be about anything you want. Each page can only be a few sentences if you’d like. To give you an idea, here’s Kathryn’s example wiki, libkat .

Here’s some theme ideas:

  • Document something you do in your job that others would have to know if you won lotto and had to leave work for a life of luxury.
  • A page about a hobby or passion
  • Plan a holiday and link to useful accommodation sites, places of interest, an itinerary etc
  • Collaborate with another participant to make a wiki together
  • Make a page linking to sites you visit often for 23 Things and add to it in the next few weeks (eg. 23 Things blog, refdesk blog, your own blog, other participant blogs you read)

HOW TO:1. Create a public wiki using PBwiki. Ensure that people can see it on the web. They will only be able to edit it if you give them the password. The instructions at the site are very clear.

SCREENCAST: Richard Marchessault has made a two minute screencast, Creating a PBwiki site, which is accessible at the Atomic Learning PBwiki - Wiki workshop page. It is screencast 3 in Part B - choosing and setting up a wiki. The other screencasts tell you about other features of wikis in general and of PBwiki in particular.

2. Use Edit to change the front page and replace what is there. (You need to do this to complete the task)

3. Not essential, but very useful to try:

3.1 Insert one link to an external web site in your page. (Atomic Learning PBwiki - Screencast 1 in Part C Working with PBwiki)

3.2 Make one more wiki page linking off the front page. ( Atomic Learning PBwiki Screencast 5 and 6 Part C Working with PBwiki)

IF YOU WANT MORE:
Try creating a wiki at one of these fee wiki sites: Wikispaces, Wetpaint , SeedWiki, Netcipia , StikiPad, Moinmoin .

Thing 5 - Record Progress

THING 5. Learn to track your progress on the passworded Murdoch University 23 Things wiki

Why? So you can see your progress.

A wiki is an easily edited web page that can be fixed easily if it gets stuffed up. You will learn more about wikis in Week 4.

When you signed up, your name was added to the Progress Chart 2008 in the Murdoch University 23 Things wiki. This progress chart, although on the internet, can only be accessed by people with the password that was mailed to you in the Week 1 23 Things mailout.

STEP BY STEP:

To track your progress:

  1. Go to the Progress Chart 2008 on the Murdoch University 23 Things wiki
  2. Enter the password
  3. Enter your name and your gmail address
  4. Do not tick the “notify me of changes” unless you want to receive an email every time someone updates the wiki. (Remember that some people will have this ticked and will see your edits). If you accidentally tick this, go back to the wiki, select “log out” from the top right hand corner and then log back in again with it unticked.
  5. At the front page, select Progress Chart 2008
  6. Find your name on the chart.
  7. Select the Edit Page button. It’s OK - you can’t break it and if it looks like you have, the page can be set back to how it was before you touched it.
  8. If someone else is editing the wiki, you will be locked out until they have finished or 15 minutes is up. A message will appear on your screen to let you know.
  9. Indicate you have finished the task either by entering the date, or a smiley icon. Select SAVE.

WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO BEFORE YOU CAN TICK OFF THING 5:

Go to the Progress Chart and tick off the Things you have completed so far, then tick off Thing 5.
